Growing Together: Inside Our Mixed Farm Project

Growing Together: Inside Our Mixed Farm Project

When the committee evaluated this farm, the first question wasn't "what's the best crop to plant" - it was "how do we avoid depending on just one." The result is a mixed farm combining coffee, maize, and poultry on leased land in Wakiso district.

Three Harvests, Three Cash Cycles

Coffee is the long-term value driver, with established export demand. Maize turns over faster, selling into local and regional markets within a season. Poultry - broilers and layers - turns over fastest of all, generating income in the gaps between the two crop harvests.

Where the Money Goes

Member capital is funding irrigation, better seedlings and inputs, and expanded poultry housing - investments aimed at increasing yield on land the farm already controls, rather than acquiring new land.

Managing Agricultural Risk

Weather and price risk are real in agriculture, and the club doesn't pretend otherwise. Diversifying across three products with different cycles - and existing off-take relationships with local aggregators and coffee exporters - is the farm's primary defence against a bad season in any single crop.
